  • Designate New TPS Humanitarian Protections for Central Americans!
Issue redesignations of Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras and a new designation for Guatemala. As you very well know, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala were hit by the devastating impact of hurricanes Eta and Iota in late 2020 resulting in extraordinary escalation of conditions in these nations. The hurricanes destroyed homes, public infrastructure, and health care systems, and crushed the agricultural sector which is the predominant occupation of the people. The political crises, human rights abuses, the pandemic’s exacerbation of economic downfall, and lack of adequate access to food, water, and health-care prevent nationals from returning safely. These conditions warrant the granting of a new TPS designation for Guatemala and redesignations for El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras. The human costs in Central America are heartbreaking and we urge your administration to take swift action to protect migrant families.

Gracias,

  • Tell President Daniel Ortega to Free Opposition Leaders in Nicaragua!
Dear President Ortega, Over the last few weeks, 15 opposition leaders in Nicaragua have been arrested for publicly voicing their opposition to your government. This silencing of political speech is unconscionable and undemocratic. The Nicaraguan people have the right to express and listen to all political views and to freely elect their leaders. Democracy is not built by depriving the opposition of its freedom and its voice. It is upon you to protect democracy and fair elections in Nicaragua. Law 1055 of 2020 undermines the political debate and weakens the rule of law. Families of those arrested are reporting that they do not know their loved ones’ whereabouts and that they don’t have access to attorneys. As the President you are responsible for ensuring due process rights and personal liberty. Hundreds of thousands of people of Nicaraguan origin live in the U.S. –– and right now their loved ones are witnessing your government make every attempt to muzzle dissenting voices. President Ortega, we demand to know where the unjustly arrested are and that they be released immediately! Thank you,

Muchas gracias, Nombre

  • Pres. Biden: Stop Trump's border wall on Day 1. #NotAnotherFoot
We call upon Joe Biden – on Day 1 – to fulfill his campaign promise that "not another foot" of Trump's disastrous wall be built during his administration. Unfortunately, this commitment has not yet appeared in any of Biden's planned executive orders, causing great concern for border city residents, Native American communities, and immigrant rights groups impacted by the wall. We can't let Trump's wall become Biden's first broken promise. Tell President-elect Joe Biden to honor his word and commit to immediately stopping the construction of Trump's cruel and destructive wall.

  • NEW TPS for Central American nationals NOW!
Issue a new Temporary Protective Status (TPS) designation for El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. As you very well know, climate catastrophes ravaged through Central America late 2020 leaving entire communities struggling to rebuild. The aftermath of Hurricanes Eta and Iota have made it nearly impossible for communities to rebuild with dignity. There is a severe social and economic crisis happening now and families need your urgent support. We commend your administration for your decision to provide a new TPS designation for Haitian nationals. This has been one of the demands that many Black, Latinx, and migrant-led organizations from across the country made early on. The climate crisis coupled with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic requires swift action and we call on your administration to also issue a new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. The human costs in Central America are heartbreaking and we urge your administration to take swift action to protect migrant families. Thank you, The undersigned

  • HELP OUR FAMILY STAY TOGETHER
My dad's next ICE meeting is in one month. We don’t know what to do anymore. He’s tried so many things everything denied. At this moment all we can do is pray and have faith. My father is a amazing man. Has no record. Not violent at all. He’s so hardworking and dedicated to his job and our family. He doesn’t deserve this and ICE doesn’t see the great man that I see everyday. He inspires me to be better and not best. Please help us get more than 20,000 signatures so ICE can see that he is important and he matters. Thank you guys so much.

  • Support Latinx Writers: Tell Flatiron Books to Fairly Represent Latinx Stories and Voices!
We urge you to take concrete steps to repair the indignity we all saw in the publication and promotion of American Dirt. While we recognize that Flatiron and you are hardly the only publishing companies to marginalize, denigrate and ignore the migrant and Latinx condition, we do see an important teachable moment for all of us in some of the more awful developments surrounding your publication of American Dirt. The content and marketing of the book marks a disturbing moment in U.S. publishing. The absurdity of using immigrant-maiming barbed wire fence as a centerpiece in a lobster dinner celebrating a book so full of insulting tropes, language and stereotypes about migrants marks a new low in US publishing. And we won’t stand for it. The good news is that the national outcry among the country’s 60 million Latinx people marks an inflection point in the national conversation. [1] In this spirit and in the name of our dignity—and yours—we call on you to repair the damage to the Latinx community by taking concrete steps demonstrating you recognize the damage done in this entire process. Among the concrete steps those in the publishing industry can take we see the following: 1. Becoming a leader in the industry by establishing a well-funded initiative to publish high-quality Latinx stories written by Latinx authors. 2. Improving the company’s ability to identify, edit and publish high-quality Latinx literature by hiring Latinx editors, marketers and other culturally sensitive personnel. 3. Establishing a west coast unit of your company dedicated to nurturing and representing Latinx talent on both sides of the Appalachians. Under the hashtags of #DignidadLiteraria and #LiteraryDignity, we will be informing the country’s Latinos of your response(s) and any of the actions we are prepared to take as we continue to organize with our communities. It is high time Latinx people are fairly represented in our stories, publishing, and in marketing. At what is clearly a critical juncture in the national conversation about Latinos, we are prepared to join you in turning this American Dirt disaster into a learning opportunity for us all.

  • Save Lives - Support AB 392 #LetUsLive
Latino Families, Leaders, and Organizations Call on the CA Latino Legislative Caucus to Protect Our Communities From Police Violence Based off data collected by the California Department of Justice, of the 172 people killed by law enforcement in California in 2017, 50% were Latino. According to the U.S. Census, 39% of Californians identify as Hispanic. We are being disproportionately killed by law enforcement officers across the state, and our people are being criminalized, racially profiled, and deported on a daily basis. We are calling on all members of the California Latino Legislative Caucus to stand with families of people killed by law enforcement and support AB 392.

  • Launch a UN investigation into US violations of the human rights of asylum seekers
We condemn the US response to a caravan of asylum seekers from South America, Central America and Mexico. The US government has closed a major port of entry, attacked refugee asylum seekers with teargas and rubber bullets and conspired with the government of Mexico to return the asylum seekers to the countries from which they fled.[1] These actions are in gross violation of international law- including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees- under which the United States government has obligations. As such, we call for an official investigation of these violations by the United States, conducted by the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights (HRC) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), and to hold the US government accountable for any such violations.

  • Demand a fair and reasonable lease for Galeria de la Raza!
Dear Thomas Foo and Lily Ng Trustee: I am writing to share that the San Francisco community, and the Mission District in particular, is very angry to learn that you have not agreed to a reasonable and fair lease for Galería de La Raza causing them to be pushed out. Hearing that you have issued another three-day pay or quit notice only further angers the community. I am aware that the Galería has been requesting a lease from the building owners, for 46 years and that a month-to-month rental is the only framework you would consider for that entire period. Recently, you have insisted on having a lease, however the terms are frankly predatory, enough so that it would be irresponsible and harmful to the Galeria to consider. The Staff and Board of Directors have acted in good faith to negotiate responsible terms that do not unnecessarily increase their overall liability and exposure. The Galería de la Raza has also dedicated substantial time to negotiate in good faith by offering to significantly lessen their space of 46 years, to one third of the size for the same rent. However, you continue to insist on a set of irrational and unrealistic lease terms. Even City of San Francisco representatives have now openly stated that they would never recommend that Galería de la Raza accept and agree to the terms you continue to impose. As a San Francisco Legacy institution, the Galería de la Raza is a recognized local, national, and international voice for Latino arts and culture––and why we must insist that you agree to a reasonable and fair lease and retract the three-day pay or quit notice!
